How to face/report a toxic player?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I came here in order to tell you a short story, and to ask for some help.

First, I apologize for my "average" english speaking and hope my topic is at the good place :-)

I began playing to Don't Starve Together last night. I had some experience in Don't Starve yet.

Today I found a nice map, with a nice group of warriors. When I joined the server, they were talking about a guy on the map ("Mattheo"), considerating the fact he destroyed camps (with lighter and hammer) in a previous game. As a "noob" I thought he was alone, so he was week. We carry on playind without thinking about it. We made a pretty adventurers' group and were ready to brave our first winter.

Then Mattheo came, under the snow, playing Webber. He first took our stuff and asked for gems we didn't have. So he left the camp... and came back with a spider army. We survived (well, they resurrected me). Then Mattheo came back with a lighter and a hammer, Insulting us, saying we would die.

As a proof we (only ?) have this :

We couldn't go on, and just felt disgust for such a child.

Conclusion :

What can we do in order to reporting this guy and stop him? It seems it's wasn't his first destroy. Moreover a (new) friend followed him and told me he was making the same thing on other server.

That was one of my first experience of DST and I'm just...sad. I understand it's not easy to find a solution against toxic player but what can we do If a guy is able to destroy all a camp, alone, against a team of fair players on a non-pvp server? Maybe lighters or other similar stuff helping to destroy all a camp should be deseable ?

I like the way "playing with new people". I met some fair people yet, just playing one only day. But this guy is following us threw servers... He changes his name, but it's the same id accord to my friend. At the moment he die, and stay on the map saying "you will die, I will drope your sanity"... In my mind, Klei need to find something, it could'nt just be "we don't want to Police", or it's a non-sen to me calling the game "DST" :'(

Well, he came to our new server making exactly the same things... and took my nickname to confuse all de players. They finally all reported him on steam (it was like "don't report this one, but the other one with de Webber face who stole your stuff"). I expect that will not stop him, but it seems there is no other option...

Maybe it would be a solution... but hosting a sever is complicated no ? You need a good connexion and keep it turn on or something like that ? And what about when the admin is not here (for exemple) ? I will cheak it out, but i'm not sure everyone can do it.

Here's what I'd suggest @Telliam, go check out the Server Bulletin and get in touch with forum members/players who are running their own dedicated servers. There are people who post in that forum with very detailed information about what their servers are all about, so try and get in servers with them. That may greatly decrease your chances of encountering another griefer, and if a griefer does get in. Hopefully an admin is present in the server you can report to.

I hope that helps, cheers.

Zillvr's advice is most in line with what you want to do. You can still meet new people, but you have the added protection of playing on a server that promotes community growth (since it came from these forums, and they're actively trying to get people to join their server and see it as the best out there).

I suppose when a guy is ban it's his steam-id which is used... ? I really hope such a griefer can't join anymore on a server...

Thank you all for you advices, I think i'm going to cheak Zillvr's solution -as my goal is to share an experience with unknow players.

This seriously almost makes me throw up, i really don't wanna go into the long rant about why this certain behavior is unwanted, but its seriously crossing the line, people like matthew are whats wrong with dst, just 1 guy can ruin an entire group of people that did an effort to survive, i was thinking maybe a global site/mod you can implement on your server that simply keeps a record of blacklisted steam ids, that way people can report the toxic players there and for all servers with this mod none of them could ever join, these are the type of people that disgust the living hell out of me, the ones without emotions..

Klei isn't gonna babysit and make the rules for servers they don't own, that's the server administration's job. Contact the server admin or make your own server.

And welcome to DST, a game full of noobish and hostile players. If you want to play on an unmoderated server, prepare for the worst. Make your base far away from the portal, and don't invest too much on it since a single griefer can destroy it. Going nomad is also a possibility.

If you or anyone else wants to make such a mod, I don't think anyone would stop you.

Maybe it would be a solution... but hosting a sever is complicated no ?

It's actually not that complicated, for simplicity you can just host the server directly through the game, keep it public and enjoy the company of friends and any friendly people that come along.

If a toxic player like this comes along use the ban command on the player list, admin's of servers have the ability to permanently ban a players steam id from the server, preventing them from joining that server ever again unless they use a completely different steam account.  If you host a server directly through the game, your automatically made the admin of that server, so all you have to do is press Tab and you can ban anybody that becomes a problem.

The main reason that klei doesn't and shouldn't get involved with policing servers is because the game is there to be played by everyone.  There is no one way to play this game, and if people want to play the game that way then they can play the game that way.  Also policing servers would imply that klei has official servers and active admin's available to man it.  That requires manpower that klei does not have, their attention is better put towards improving the game itself, rather than the players who play it.

If you want to avoid these types of players then you need to take it upon yourself to either find a server where the admin is actively policing the server themselves, or host the server yourself and ban anybody that ruins the game experience for you and your group.

Hosting directly through your game is actually pretty simple and easy, you start up the server, people can join and leave at their will, and when your done playing you can close down the server to play another day.

It only gets complicated if you decide to host a dedicated server, but those servers function differently than the ones you host through the game normally.

As far as how to face a troll/griefer, the worst thing you can do is acknowledge him. If you've done that, they've instantly won no matter what you do after that.

It's pretty hard not to acknowledge a troll/griefer while they fire dance through your camp but I get your point :)

To be honest we can't stop this from happening. If someone (can happen at a moments notice) gets the urge to troll/grief it's game over. The ONLY way to prevent this is to make it so you can't destroy structures made by other players.

Or

Here it comes...there could be an option where the player who built the structure can select any one of their structures and toggle it to become a structure that can be destroyed by other players.

Apart from that if you're admin then just ban the troll/griefer, even if you were once close friends.

Thats totally wrong! You have to name the people and their behavior by the right words. Looking away and ignoring it will make things worse. You can be polite to them, since it is just a game.

What you shouldn't do is to get emotional and showing your hate or aggression to them. Instead just say, what and who they are in a neutral way. You can become insulting its up to you, but stick in a neutral view and don't become yourself a griefer ;-)

"Hey, he burned / destroyed the base. You know what you are? A griefer!" If you guys keep repeating that way, the griefers won't last long on the server.

If they do some type of player immunity with structures, I hope they at least give it some elegance or reason or notification for being immune..or just make it completely unclickable the way they make players unclickable when pvp is turned off. I'd be ok with that, too.

This first sentence I quoted of what you said is actually exactly what I meant. I agree, but I'd also include not showing emotion at all towards the griefer.

The second part, however, I disagree. By telling him he's a griefer, you're giving him exactly what he wants. He already knows what he's doing - trying to annoy you - and by acknowledging him he knows he's won.

The only helpful thing at this point that you can do in-game is alert an admin. If you want to casually give the rest of the server a heads up, that's cool.

(just my 2 cents)
